Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

by Fr. Jonah, O.P.

Fr. Jonah here, filling in for Fr. Boniface while he’s away (though he’ll be back by the time you’re reading this).

We’re now back in Ordinary Time. The sense of the word “ordinary” here isn’t meant to portray this time as unremarkable or unimportant. “Ordinary” comes from the Latin word ordo (order, sequence), and Ordinary Time takes us in an orderly way through the life of Christ. It’s a time of conversion. Imagine it as the time the apostles spent when Jesus started his public ministry, leading up to the events surrounding his betrayal, death, and resurrection.

So use Ordinary Time as the season to follow Jesus through the Gospels, staying close to the sacraments of confession and the Eucharist, taking time to pray every day, following Jesus through his life and ours.

God bless you!

Fr. Jonah, O.P.
