sixth sunday of ordinary time

by Fr. Boniface, O.P.

Dear St. Joseph Parish Family,

This Sunday begins our Journey with Joseph! Make sure to pick up the book of meditations for the next 33 days (we’ll also email the meditations and they’re available on our parish website). The friars here wrote the meditations for our parish specifically. And we did so the old-fashioned way: we didn’t use AI for any of the writing! There’s a lot of parts to the Journey with Joseph, so check out our parish webpage and emails for all the details.

We also have a new reliquary by the statue of St. Joseph near the sanctuary. We have placed all the parish relics in it and during the Journey with Joseph we’ll highlight saints in the reliquary who had a special devotion to St. Joseph.

We have a new crest in the floor just in front of the sanctuary. It’s our Provincial shield for the St. Joseph Province of Dominicans. The outer black and white part of the crest is the Dominican shield, with the Provincial elements superimposed. Because we’re the Province of St. Joseph, those elements relate to St. Joseph. It contains three lilies, a sign of St. Joseph’s purity, and the chevron in the middle is his carpenter’s rule. There is a blue background for Mary as well. Underneath is the motto of the Dominicans: ‘veritas’ (truth).

This Wednesday Lent begins. We’ll have four Ash Wednesday Masses, at 8am, 12:10pm, 5pm, and 7pm. Ashes can only be given out in a liturgy, so at those Masses. It’s not a Holy Day of Obligation, but it’s good to attend a Mass to start Lent.

During these last days before Lent, prepare for a good Lent. Pray about a good penance to undertake: one that is doable but not too easy. There’s a lot of grace this season, so take advantage!

Also, remember: no meat on Fridays during Lent, and fasting on Ash Wednesday (only 1 meal, no meat, and up to 2 snacks that don’t total a meal).

God bless,

Fr. Boniface
